Celebrate the Season with Performance and Art

Each holiday season, British Columbia proves a treasure trove of curtain calls and one-of-a-kind keepsakes.  Let us count the ways:  Caravan Farm Theatre’s Winter Sleigh Ride Show, set on 80 acres of field and forest in the Thompson Okanagan, revisits The Nativity with a cast of characters that includes King Herod, the wandering “wise men,” and Gabriel with his host of angels, to name a few.  Playwright Martha Ross’s Caravan spin on the Christmas story runs December 11 - 31.  In Whistler, it’s all about uncovering the eclectic during the 21st annual Bizarre Bazaar, November 27 - 28.  This creative force of natural talent will showcase wares from over 100 artisans from the Sea to Sky Corridor, Lower Mainland and beyond.  As an added bonus, the Arts Council’s Performance Series promises the best of Canadian music and dance throughout the year at Whistler’s MY Millennium Place.  In December, throngs of shoppers will be drawn to Vancouver’s Granville Island; Yuletide on Granville promises plenty of reasons to congregate each weekend with roving performers and carollers on an outdoor stage. For unique Christmas finds, visitors can snag locally handcrafted items from the more than 50 artisans throughout the Island.  Eager to see Santa in a watery setting?  Take the tykes to the Vancouver Aquarium in December for views of Scuba Claus (a.k.a. St. Nick in scuba gear) as he swims with a few finned friends.  Should your idea of winter fun be akin to a road trip, head east to Farm House Natural Cheeses in Agassiz for their Journey to Bethlehem Christmas Pageant, December 11 - 13; don’t forget to buy that Castle Blue or sharp white cheddar on your way out the door.  Cedar-Yellowpoint Artisan’s Country Christmas Tour in Nanaimo promises more on-road adventure on Vancouver Island.  From November 19 – 22, get behind the wheel and thread your way through a wealth of artisan studios, shops and farms for tasty and textural self-guided tours.  www.caravanfarmtheatre.com; www.whistlerartscouncil.com; www.granvilleisland.com; www.visitvanaqua.org; www.farmhousecheeses.com; www.cyartisans.com
